Referencing and plagiarism

What is referencing?

Referencing acknowledges you've used the ideas or written/recorded material belonging to another author.

Why do I have to reference?

  • It gives authority to your work
  • It demonstrates you've done the appropriate research for assignments
  • It enables you and your readers to trace useful material again
  • It helps you to avoid plagiarism - stealing someone else's ideas
  • It helps you to abide by Copyright Law

UoB Harvard referencing system

The Faculty of Health and Social Sciences (other than the Psychology department) uses the UoB Harvard referencing system.

There are two kinds of references: textual references (i.e. references within the text) and a list of references cited (i.e. the bibliography), which is given at the end of the assignment.

RefWorks

RefWorks is the referencing software promoted to staff and students, in view of it's ease of use and accessibility. It can save you a lot of time with referencing and assignments by allowing you to:

  • Store useful references in your own online account
  • Import references directly from DISCOVER
  • Import book citations from the catalogue or Dawsonera
  • Automatically create reference lists in a chosen style (e.g. UoB Harvard)

There are now two versions of the Refworks software available for you to use on or off campus. You will need to register to use whichever (or both) Refworks version you choose:

(Old) Refworks

As your Academic Librarian, I will possibly be providing a workshop in the use of the software as part of your course. This would be advertised on BREO.
