Television

Audiovisual resources such as TV and radio programmes, DVDs and podcasts can help to clarify a topic for you and give you a greater understanding.

Advantages Disadvantages
Provide concise, visual information Not a major forum for academic research
Can help to clarify a topic Usually aimed at the general public rather than at students and researchers
More a 'background' rather than a 'core' resource

DVDs in the library

The library has a collection of DVDs to support your studies. These include:

  • Off-air recordings of TV documentaries and current affairs programmes (e.g. Dispatches: Why kids kill)
  • Fictional programmes and feature films which deal with social science subjects and may help to give you a greater understanding of a situation (e.g. Raining Stones by Ken Loach is a film which deals with poverty in the UK).

All DVDs are available for 7 day loan or you may use our facilities to watch them within the libraries. They are located on Level 1 at both Polhill Library and at Park Square LRC in the Audio-visual sections.

You can search for DVDs by using Advanced search in the library catalogue, selecting DVD under Material type and entering your search terms in the usual way.

All DVDs and videos are given classmarks in the same way as books. Once familiar with these you can browse the shelves of the Audio-visual section easily. Click here for a list of useful classmarks for the Applied Social Studies.
