Cicely Read

A former student of Bedford Physical Training College (1909-1911) who excelled in gymnastics and was one of the few to play both hockey and lacrosse for England.

She returned to Bedford in 1918 to become a college tutor and in 1920 took over the teaching of gymnastics from the College’s founder, Margaret Stansfeld.

In the vanguard of educational gymnastics she represented her country internationally and served on numerous committees contributing to the development of Physical Education in national programmes, writing books on Hockey and Lacrosse and sports skills for girls, and later becoming Vice-Principal under Margaret Stansfeld.

Cicely was appointed Principal in 1945, serving faithfully until her sudden death in 1949.
