Bedford Library: A student's experience

The library is usually calm and welcoming, with different areas to suit different ways of studying. Some spaces are busier and more social, especially around midday, while others are designed to be quiet and low-stimulus. You’re always free to move around and choose the space that feels right for you.

Quiet and silent study spaces are clearly labelled in the library. These areas are designed for concentration and reduced noise. If you’re unsure where to go, library staff can help you find a suitable space.

The Library offers a range of inclusive support services to help neurodiverse students and those with disabilities study in a way that feels comfortable and manageable. This includes flexible borrowing, assistive technology, accessible spaces, and support from staff who can guide you at your own pace. You can take your time and access support in a way that suits your individual needs.

Luton Library Calm Room

The Luton Library offers a Calm Room which provides a quiet, low‑stimulus space for when you may need time away from busy study areas. It is designed to support wellbeing and is particularly helpful if you feel overwhelmed, anxious or simply need a calm environment to reset before continuing your studies.

Use TopDesk, the University’s information service portal

You can log your library enquiry online through TopDesk at a time that suits you.

This is a good option if you prefer writing your question rather than asking in person.

A response is usually provided within 3 working days.

It’s okay if asking for help feels difficult or overwhelming. You’re not expected to know everything, and there are different ways to get support that don’t always involve speaking face‑to‑face.

Contact the library by email via siaps@beds.ac.uk, phone, or ask staff face-to-face when you feel ready and comfortable.

Library Services staff are here to help and will respond in a calm, respectful way. You can find out when library staff are available on our opening hours page

Point of contact: carly.ramirez-herelle@beds.ac.uk or kathryn.scott@beds.ac.uk

You can book an individual chat with a member of the Library team to help you explore the resources and support available to you. These sessions are informal and relaxed, giving you space to ask questions, explore what the library offers, or simply have a friendly conversation at your own pace.

There’s no pressure and no need to prepare in advance. The opportunity is there to help you feel more confident and comfortable using the library.
