Self Service

Borrowing, renewing and returning library items is a self-service activity at all sites of the University. At Luton and Bedford collection of inter campus reservations (holds) is also a self-service activity (please remember to issue the items you collect). Luton reservations are kept on Level 1 of the Library and Bedford reservations are on the ground floor of the library. Document Supply items, DVDs and CD case opening and general queries will be dealt with by staff at the all the Customer Service desks.

You will need:

  • your ID card
  • your library password

At Luton, Self Issue machines and the Self Returns machines are on level 1 and level 0.

At Bedford, Self Issue machines are on level 0. The Self Return machine may be accessed from the outside of the library building.

At Aylesbury, Self Issue machines are opposite the Customer Service desk and Returns machine is just inside the Library doors.

At UCMK, Self Returns is near the main reception.

You may borrow up to 20 items at a time (except Teaching Practice students at Bedford). Take your items and ID to a self issue kiosk and issue them following the on screen instructions. Remember to pick up your receipt as it will tell you the date the items are due back.

University of Bedfordshire operates an automatic renewals service unless the item is reserved by another customer. Your items will be renewed up to 25 times on your behalf.

  • please monitor your loans for any reservation recalls (you will get an email too via the library catalogue. You will need your student ID number and your library password to access your library account.
  • be sure to reserve any item currently on loan to ensure that the book you need is recalled

This self service facility is available via the library catalogue and DISCOVER. You can reserve up to 6 items at any one time and they can be from any campus. Items will be delivered to the Campus you specify when placing the reservation. You will need to log in to place a reservation. You may view your library record to see how your reservation is progressing. The message: "Ready for pick up" indicates that you may collect it from the specified location.


If your loans become overdue you will have to pay a fine per item

50p per standard loan
75p per 7 day loan

An overdue reminder will be sent to your university email account in the first instance.

If you wish to have a list of all the materials you have borrowed from University of Bedfordshire you can find it in your library record.

Go into the Renewals tab of the Library Catalogue

Sign in with your usual ID & Password

You will be taken to a My Record screen to the left of your name on that screen there will be a button called “Borrowing History” click on that and the list of your library loans will come up.
