Statistics guide

Introduction

This statistics guide will attempt to bring together some of the commonly requested statistics which are used by students, and hopefully in this way introduce a range of resources. Statistics will often help to support your arguments in assignments, and can be a powerful tool in getting across your point.

As with any source of information you should be aware that some statistics are more reliable than others. Referencing quality information will hopefully improve your grades, and make your work look professional.

Be aware that it often takes a while to gather and publish statistics. For instance the UK Census of Population is carried out every ten years. As the latest census was in 2011 current UK population statistics are likely to be estimates.

Each section of this guide will begin with a commonly asked question on a particular topic, and where to find a figure in either a printed or electronic source.
