Dissertations

Some of the materials we stock at the University of Bedfordshire's Libraries have unique storage points and restricted access.

Print Dissertations

All of the University of Bedfordshire PhD and research masters theses may be accessed electronically via the University repository.

A small sample of undergraduate and taught postgraduate dissertations are held in print at Aylesbury LRC, Bedford Library and Luton Library for a limited period as examples of good layout and presentation. These are available on a reference basis upon request from the Customer Service Desk staff.

You can search for dissertations using the Advanced Search tab in the library catalogue. Complete as many details as possible and in the "Material Type" field click on the drop down arrow and select "Dissertation/Project". This will show you the dissertations with your search criteria. When you have chosen the item you want, make a note of the classmark number and bring it to the staff at the Customer Service Desk.

Due to the unique nature of this material there are stringent access regulations

  • Dissertations are strictly for library use only.
  • Items can only be requested and consulted during staffed hours.
  • Only one item per person may be requested at a time.
  • A sign out sheet must be completed and your student ID card must be handed over.
  • Items must be returned before staff leave: sign out sheet completed and ID returned.

Alternatively there are a small number of undergraduate dissertations that are now available electronically.  Follow the instructions above and if the one you are searching for is available electronically there will be a link which you can follow.  You will need to enter you student ID number and password to gain access to them.

Rolling Stack

Print journals and special collections are held in rolling stacks at both the Luton campus Library and Bedford campus Library. This is an open access facility and students are encouraged to use the material held in the rolling stacks following these guidelines.

Bedford Campus Library

The rolling stacks at Bedford campus Library are electronic and hold journal collections, newspapers and reference books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias.

There are instructions on the outside of the stacks to advise you on use.

Before using the stacks, please check if anyone is in between any of the units. If someone else is using the stacks, you will need to wait for them to finish before you can move the units. For this reason, once you have found the material you are looking for please use the provided study spaces to peruse your items.

If there is no one else using the rolling stacks, press the blue arrow buttons on the end of the units to move the stacks in the appropriate direction.

If you need to stop the stack moving, there is a stop button available in between the blue directional buttons.

If you find yourself in a stack whilst someone else is moving it, there is a brake kick-bar that runs across the bottom of the shelving units; a firm push of the bar will stop the stacks moving. This will make the red lights flash and the directional buttons inoperable. To reset the units, press the blue button next to the Emergency Release.

Luton Campus Library

The rolling stacks at Luton campus Library are electronic and hold the journal collection and the end of the book stock.

There are instructions on the outside of the stacks to advise you on how to use them.

Before using the stacks, please check if anyone is in between any of the units. If someone else is using the stacks, you will need to wait for them to finish before you can move the units. For this reason, once you have found the material you are looking for please use the provided study spaces to peruse your items.

If there is no one else using the rolling stacks, make sure all the circular lights are orange and then press the blue arrow button facing the unit you wish to open.

If you have any concerns about using the rolling stacks at either campus, please ask the Customer Service Desk staff to help you.
