Journals

Journals

Journals are published regularly which means the content is very up-to-date in comparison with books. They are sometimes known as periodicals.

Even with a particular subject journals may be either general (such as the New Law Journal) or more specific (for example Criminal Law Review)

There are several different types of journal. Some trade magazines may simply include news items. Other journals may be issued by a society or institution and contain news, proceedings, transactions and reports of work carried out in a particular field.

Scholarly journals

Scholarly journals may be peer-reviewed, which means that subject specialists have read an article and considered that it is of a suitable academic standard. This means you are assured that you are reading quality information. Some databases will permit you to limit your search to peer-reviewed journals.
