A Guide to Referencing
Referencing is the way of showing that you have used the ideas of other people in your work.
This includes things which you have read in books and journals, consulted on the internet or watched on film.
So why do you have to reference?
- At university level you are meant to read and understand the ideas of other people. Referencing is a way of proving you have done this. It should make your work look academic.
- Referencing enables you and your readers to trace useful material again.
- Providing full references helps you avoid the risk of plagiarism.
Which system should you use?
Most Departments in the University use the Harvard referencing system. There are however some guidelines for specific departments.
