RefWorks

What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a reference management system that is web-based so it accessible from any internet-connected device.  RefWorks lets you:

  • create and manage your personal bibliographic database
  • manually create (type) in references
  • import journal article details from databases (such as the EBSCOhost RD collections)
  • import book citations  from the library catalogue  or ebook collections (like DawsonEra)
  • automatically create and format reference lists in a chosen style (such as Harvard)
Getting started with RefWorks

RefWorks can save you a lot of time with preparing assignments, reading lists or publications.  It only takes five steps to get started with RefWorks: This Five Steps helpsheet takes you through the basics (of creating your account, setting a preferred reference style and so on).

Once you have mastered the basics, the Next Five Steps helpsheet takes you through some more advanced features.

You can access RefWorks by going to the page on the library catalogue and creating an account.

Help

RefWorks has put together an excellent collection of onscreen demonstrations and helpsheets.  On the RefWorks menu bar, open the Help menu and click on Tutorials.

Your Academic Liaison Library would be happy to help you with RefWorks and show you how to use it with your subject area’s digital resources.  To request an appointment, email or telephone them.  Also, the library has a RefWorks blog which posts news about service upgrades and key features.

You can access RefWorks by going to the page on the RefWorks entry on the library catalogue and creating an account for yourself.

Assignments & RefWorks

The default output styles used by RefWorks may not necessarily comply with the referencing style preferred by your department.  The Guide to Referencing lists some of styles used by departments who do not use Harvard.  The Output Style Manager in RefWorks gives you hundreds of house style layouts to choose from.
